In September 1963, Mary Kay Ash launched the organization that bears her name to this day. The initial recipe for the first nine products in the line came from a tanner whose epidermis was not aged, as it should be. Beginning with beauty items, the organization continues to market them as their foundation products. Based in Addison, Texas the world home office are now run by Ms. Ash's son Richard Rogers and David Holl.
The first years profits were just under $200,000 and the organization had 318 consultants promoting the items. Utilizing a multi-level marketing style supplying income through sales and recruiting, the model has helped the company expand to worldwide popularity within the beauty industry.
In 1968, Mary Kay commissioned the very first pink Cadillac that is recognized across the world. The car appeared to be repainted on the same lot where it was purchased. As the brand grew, the pink vehicle became one of many benefits for individuals who took marketing these products seriously. The vehicles are reserved for whoever has national sales director status and produce a required level of income.
Over time, the merchandise has entered into many other countries with varying degrees of success. The colors often have to be manipulated to match industry they are entering and in some cases, fewer items can be found to prevent having to completely retool the line. The restrictions of each country have caused difficulty in entering some markets.
Like any huge company, Mary Kay is not immune to controversy. In the 1980s, the organization was targeted by animal rights activists looking to stop evaluating the products on animals. In 1989, the organization stopped all animal testing and in 1996, they removed fur coats from the list of incentive promotions.
Although embarrassed from the intense critique from the press, the business was able to move forward away from this issue, but quickly landed in hot water for another issue. The following main dispute was over the firing of a director who hadn't produced for several months due to sickness. The director lost the suit with the courts ruling that independent workers don't enjoy workplace protections that an employee would have. This was an impactful ruling for all businesses that hire impartial companies.
Experiencing the growing pains of any company, they have been in a position to weather a few questionable storms and continue to offer one of the best known beauty product lines on the planet. The pink vehicles continue to be a recognized reward with over 100,000 agents qualifying for them over the life of the program.
