In September 1963, Mary Kay Ash started the company that bears her name to this day. The original formula for the initial nine products in the line came from a tanner whose epidermis was not aged, as it should be. Starting with beauty items, the organization continues to advertise them as their foundation products. Based in Addison, Texas the world headquarters are now run by Ms. Ash's son Richard Rogers and David Holl.
The initial years earnings were just under $200,000 and the organization had 318 consultants promoting the merchandise. Utilizing a multilevel marketing style supplying earnings through sales and recruiting, the model has helped the company grow to worldwide dominance inside the beauty industry.
In 1968, Mary Kay commissioned the very first pink Cadillac that is recognized worldwide. The vehicle was repainted on the same lot where it was purchased. As the brand grew, the pink vehicle became one of the main incentives for individuals who took marketing these products seriously. The vehicles are reserved for those who have nationwide sales director status and deliver a required level of revenue.
Through the years, the merchandise has launched into many other nations with varying degrees of success. The colors often have to be altered to fit industry they are entering and in many cases, fewer items can be found to avoid having to completely retool the line. The rules of each nation have caused difficulty in entering some markets.
Like any major business, Mary Kay isn't immune to controversy. In the 1980s, the organization was targeted by animal rights activists hoping to stop evaluating these products on animals. In 1989, the company stopped all animal testing and in 1996, they eliminated fur coats from the list of incentive promotions.
Though embarrassed by the strong scrutiny from the press, the business was able to move past this issue, but quickly landed in serious trouble for another issue. The following main dispute was over the firing of a director who had not produced for several months due to sickness. The director lost the suit with the courts ruling that independent contractors do not enjoy workplace protections that an employee would have. This was an impactful ruling for all businesses that hire independent companies.
When Mary Kay was started, Ms. Ash used her life savings of $5,000 to advance the initial products. By means of determination and promotion of consultants who were given the opportunity to make money through her products, the organization has exploded to estimated annual income of over two billion dollars.
Experiencing the growing pains of any company, they have been able to weather a few controversial thunder storms and continue to offer one of the better known beauty products in the world. The pink vehicles continue to be a recognized reward with over 100,000 agents qualifying for them over the life of the program.
